SHIELDS: Throw the Tyrant Overboard

Wednesday, December 28, 2022

The GOP finds itself in wretched circumstances. Despite President Biden’s many failures and radicalism, Republicans barely took back the House and lost the Senate.

There is no platform on which Republicans are unified; no vision for the future of the party. The ship is headed toward an iceberg. If we are to change course, our captain must be thrown overboard.

Donald Trump is a tyrant. He lied about winning the 2020 election, and did nothing to stop the traitors who stormed our Capitol in support of his conspiracies. Had Trump’s schemes succeeded, it would have meant the end of the republic.

Far from repenting of these sins, his lies and tyrannical acts persist. Trump obsesses over his defeat, and recently claimed that suspending the Constitution would be an acceptable course of action to restore him to power.

This treasonous suggestion found a concerning number of supporters, including Rep. Paul Gosar. It must be said that if Trump and his enablers were to attempt this proposed overthrow of our Constitution, it would be the duty of all patriots to subject them to the only end which is fitting for a traitor.

As Trump pursues his tyranny and delusions, he has proven unable to care about anything else, desiring only that Republicans bend the knee and idolize him. No matter how depraved or disturbed one is, if he pays tribute to Trump and his lies, he will receive Trump’s blessing. This was how Kanye West, an open anti-Semite, was able to bring another anti-Semite, Nick Fuentes, to dine with the former president.

Contrariwise, it matters not how great of an American those who oppose him are; their righteousness is of no concern to him, nor is their conservatism and value to the party.

He has consistently attacked Vice President Mike Pence, who was loyal to the disgraced president until Trump waged war against the very foundations of our republic. He has attacked Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, who was a key contributor to the overturning of Roe v. Wade. In his typical vile manner, Trump also insulted Senator McConnell’s wife, Elaine Chao (who resigned from Trump’s cabinet over his tyrannical acts on January 6th). In a racist statement, Trump said that McConnell must “immediately seek help and advise from his China loving wife, Coco Chow!”

Chao is from the free and independent nation of Taiwan, but few know better than Trump what it’s like to love America’s enemies.

He sought vengeance against those Republicans wise enough to oppose him, ensuring in many races his candidates won their primaries and then promptly gave their safe-Republican districts to Democrats.

Once his candidates won primaries, he ceased helping them in any useful way, it was in fact Senator McConnell who did the most to help them. Trump cost Republicans crucial senate seats such as those in Pennsylvania and Georgia, and even when his candidates won they lagged behind true conservatives.

He spent the election night celebrating when Republicans who did not embrace him lost to Democrats. He hurled middle school insults at Governor Ron DeSantis as he deals with his jealousy and insecurity over DeSantis proving to be the capable leader the party needs.

To Trump, the GOP is merely an instrument by which he can further his desire for power. He demands our worship, and far too many have been eager to make him an idol. Others have been too weak to stand up to him. Disaster has ensued.

Not only has the GOP suffered embarrassing electoral setbacks, the party itself has become corrupted by the Trumpian populism that seeks to replace conservatism.

This Trumpism is election denial, with Kari Lake going so far as to ask people to commit felonies for her. Trumpism is a rejection of free markets, and fights the culture war not in a righteous manner but in a sinful and hateful manner that seeks not to improve the nation but to hurt Trump’s enemies. Above all, it is a personality cult that worships the man at the expense of true and just principles. It is idolatry; a violation of the First Commandment.

The American people will not tolerate this pathetic tyrant. This last election proved Americans will even pick the madness of the Left over the madness of Trump.

If our party is going to find a new course that advances the American Creed, we must throw Trump overboard. If we do not, the ship will sink and the republic will go with it.

Get a new captain, and our party can once again be a source of liberty and justice for our nation and the world.
