SHIELDS: A Good Guy With a Gun Did What the Police Would Not

There have been a horrifying amount of mass shootings this year, and as is expected, the Democrats are using the violence to push for gun control. No shooting has been used more effectively by the Democrats in this endeavor than the Uvalde school shooting that left 19 students and 2 teachers dead.

Yet when the Uvalde shooting is contrasted with the Indiana mall shooting, the Democrats’ gun control arguments are shattered, and the truth that an armed citizenry is a safe citizenry is resoundingly affirmed.

The more we learn about the Uvalde shooting, the more enraging it is. The shooter entered the school at 11:33 a.m. and barricaded himself in a classroom, while the police entered the school at 11:35 a.m. In violation of their own protocols, the police did not breach the room and kill the shooter immediately, rather it was not until 12:50 p.m. that Border Patrol stormed the room and killed the shooter without seeking approval from the commanding officer.

The findings of the Texas house committee investigating the shooting expose the infuriating and shameful actions of the police. An officer had an opportunity to kill the shooter before he entered the school, but declined to do so without the approval of a superior. 376 law enforcement officers from various agencies arrived at the scene, yet they did not confront and kill the shooter. While children called 911 begging the police to do something and covered themselves in their classmates’ blood to play dead, heavily armed officers were applying hand sanitizer in the hallway.

Police leadership cared more about arresting and harassing parents and spouses than they did killing the school shooter. Police Officer Ruben Ruiz tried to save his wife, Eva Mireles, but was detained and disarmed. His wife was murdered. When Angeli Gomez, a mother of two students, arrived at the scene and demanded the police do their duty, they put her in cuffs and threatened to arrest her. After Gomez convinced the police to uncuff her, the unarmed woman rushed into the school and saved her children.

The police wasted time searching for a key to unlock the classroom door which we now know was unlocked the entire time.

300 Spartans battled against the full might of the Persian army at Thermopylae. Roughly two dozen Navy SEALs killed Osama bin Laden. 18-year-old men stormed the beaches of Normandy under Nazi fire. But when children were being murdered only 50 feet away, 376 cowards sat on their hands. As the committee said, “They failed to prioritize saving the lives of innocent victims over their own safety.”

Pathetic. Cowardly. Sinful. But not unique.

Indeed, during the Parkland school shooting, the coward, Deputy Scot Peterson, also hid while children died. These shootings reveal a grim truth: if an evil man attempts to murder your children, you cannot rely on the police to stop him.

Then there’s the Indiana shooting. When a murderer opened fire in a mall and murdered 3 people, Elisjsha Dicken shot and killed the murderer, saving countless lives. He did his duty to God and man by exercising his Second Amendment rights. Had the Democrats gotten their way, he would have been unarmed and unable to fulfill his duty.

The media moved away from the story quickly. They do not care about what saves lives—as seen by their refusal to stop saying the names of these shooters—they care solely about the advancement of their depraved ideology.

But the heroism of Dicken contrasted with the cowards in Uvalde proves the goodness and necessity of the Second Amendment, and the brave and righteous men who exercise their liberties in the defense of themselves and others.

A good bystander with a gun will do what the police will not.

So as our republic grapples with the violence that is growing worse and worse, what shall we do? Give up our guns? Make the whole Union a gun-free zone like the Uvalde elementary school? Depend on the police who put their own bureaucratic protocols above the lives of our children? Depend on the police that the Supreme Court has correctly ruled have no constitutional obligation to protect us?

Or will we defend and exercise our natural right to self-defense? Will we Americans arm ourselves so that we may defend the innocent as God commands us to do?

These shootings have proved once again that what protects our children, what protects our fellow citizens, and what protects ourselves, is when good guys have guns.
