For years, the People’s Republic of China has been aiming to expand its borders. Its targets include Vietnam, the Philippines, and Taiwan, with the case of the latter being especially dire. The free world must stand behind Taiwan.
Since 1948, the Chinese government in Beijing has seen the Taiwanese democracy as a weak state which it promises to annex in the coming decades, if necessary, by force.
Taiwan is only recognized by a handful of countries compared to its communist rival on the mainland. With so few friends, Taiwan is between a rock and a hard place.
The United States has been one of the few nations to actively support Taiwan. However, some within the US military see Taiwan as a hill not worth dying on and would rather leave it to the wolves. They argue that the island isn’t worth spilling American blood for what they see as an inevitable Chinese seizure.
If the United States follows this doctrine, it will not only doom Asia but likely will throw the world into a tailspin. A Chinese annexation of Taiwan could easily become a slippery slope that paves the way for the Chinese conquest of the South China Sea.
However, if America continues to hold its strong stance on defending Taiwan, it could avert a situation where China dominates the rest of East Asia.
The United States should never give the People’s Republic an inch because they would take far more than a mile. Since 1948, Beijing has expanded into regions like Tibet and intervened in both Korea as well as Vietnam. One only needs to look at the treatment of Uyghurs, the brutalization of Tibetans, and the shattering of Hong Konger’s rights to understand what would happen to Taiwan under Beijing’s heel.
How Taiwan decides to move forward is up to its government. Whether it wants to continue to be recognized as the true China or blaze a path of complete independence as the Taiwanese Republic, America should loudly stand by the island’s side.
China would only ever strike if it felt Taiwan was weak and had no allies. Only by showcasing our resolve to defend Taiwan will we truly keep the peace.
If we listen to military officials who chant isolationism and cowardice, we will see the world be consumed by war and bow to the red flag of Marxism.
As President Reagan once said “We know only too well that war comes not when the forces of freedom are strong, but when they are weak. It is then that tyrants are tempted.”
