The Lockdowns Have Failed

Tuesday, May 25, 2021

Texas recently rescinded its mask mandate as well as reopened schools and businesses. Pandemic hawks are decrying this move as a reckless blow to public health. They argue that Texas reopened “too soon.”This move by Governor Greg Abbot comes far too late. The lockdowns cheered on by politicians and the mainstream media have failed to prevent the spread of COVID while crippling our economy.

Dr. Fauci and his allies prescribed stay-at-home orders all across the country. These lockdowns were aimed at limiting people’s contact to slow the spread of the virus. However, the data shows that states that never adopted these policies fared much better than states that did.

Seven states that never fully locked down are Utah, South Dakota, North Dakota, Nebraska, Iowa, Wyoming, and Arkansas. These states have some of the lowest deaths per capita. In contrast, the states with some of the strictest lockdowns, New Jersey, New York, and Massachusetts, are the top three in deaths per capita.

California has the most active cases in the country despite having a draconian lockdown. Their 1.4 million active cases are more than double that of Florida’s. Additionally, California’s active cases are almost 30 percent higher. This is despite Florida having limited to no restrictions.

The Lancet published a study on July 21 in which they collected data from the 50 countries with the most cases. They found that “government actions such as border closures, full lockdowns, and a high rate of COVID-19 testing were not associated with statistically significant reductions in the number of critical cases or overall morality.” Similarly, researchers from Tel Aviv University found no statistical association between lockdown strictness and the number of coronavirus deaths.

The lockdowns resulted in severe ramifications for mental health. Cases of loneliness, anxiety, depression and suicide have all skyrocketed during the pandemic. In October, more than 6,000 scientists signed a petition calling for an end to the lockdowns, citing the “irreparable damage” the restrictions have caused.

A study conducted by Just Facts and reviewed by Joseph P. Damore, Jr. concluded that “anxiety created by reactions to COVID-19…will destroy at least seven times more years of human life than can be possibly saved by lockdowns to control the spread of disease.” The study also notes that the mental health of about one-third to one-half of all adults has been significantly compromised.

The CDC reported that 25 percent of young adults considered committing suicide during the lockdowns. In the Clark County, Nevada school district, 18 students committed suicide during the nine months of school closures. The youngest student was only nine years old. This massive toll on mental health prompted a World Health Organization official to implore leaders to stop using lockdowns as a primary control method.

Unemployment has also rapidly increased. According to NPR, the jobless rate could be the highest since World War II. An economic impact report from Yelp found that most of the businesses that closed between March 2 and August 31 will not be reopening. The sectors hit the hardest were restaurants, retail, bars, fitness, and the beauty industry.

The lockdowns have not been detrimental to everyone, however. Jeff Bezos’ stock in Amazon is worth billions of dollars more after the lockdown. Bezos added $13 billion to his net worth in July 2020. Amazon’s shares soared by 7.9 percent, which was the biggest spike since December 2018. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg increased his net worth by $15 billion.

According to CNBC’s Jim Cramer, the pandemic and the subsequent lockdowns paved the way for “one of the greatest wealth transfers in history.” Small businesses have been decimated while massive corporations have thrived.

The individuals who constantly complain about income inequality, the billionaire class, and corporate America are among the most vocal supporters of the lockdowns.

There have been some exceptions on the left, such as liberal feminist Naomi Wolf. She appeared on Tucker Carlson Tonight to express her concerns. She said that America is “moving into a coup situation, a police state” because of the pandemic restrictions.

In Florida, even Democrats are admitting that Gov. Ron DeSantis’ COVID strategy was the right move. Florida has a growing real estate market and an unemployment rate of 5.1%. Their schools have been in-person since the fall. DeSantis has widely rejected strict lockdown tactics and his state has flourished as a result

The lockdowns have accomplished nothing except the destruction of people’s livelihoods and the deterioration of their mental health. Any bureaucrat or public health expert that still supports these measures is either delusional or has ulterior motives.
