Twitter Cleanup Site Forced Me to Un-Like Mainstream Conservative Posts

Wednesday, May 19, 2021

As I procrastinated finishing up my finals I decided to do what many students getting ready to apply for internships and jobs are doing-  delete my old tweets. It’s an arduous task, but there are actually websites that will mass delete your tweets for you. So I browsed through a few options until I found a free service called Semiphemeral.

I linked it to my Twitter account, selected how far back I wanted it to delete, and then clicked ‘run’. Job done, right? Wrong. A few moments later the screen changed and a message appeared saying “In the last 6 months, you have liked 20 tweets from fascist influencers” and that my account would be disabled until I deleted them. I also received a DM from Semiphemeral saying I was temporarily blocked.

I don’t follow or interact with anyone who could be deemed a fascist, so I knew there had to be more to this than meets the eye. Thankfully, they informed me of the “fascists” in question-  Ben Shapiro, Candace Owens, Donald Trump Jr., Tomi Lahren, and Mark Levin.

What a surprise. They were all prominent conservative commentators or political figures who aren’t “fascists” by any stretch of the imagination. Semipheral does not state why these conservatives were specifically flagged as “fascists “ so, ostensibly, they are labeling any account that appears to be on the right side of the political spectrum.

On Semiphemeral’s website they state that they are “an antifascist service” and that “in order to prevent fascists from using this free privacy service, Semiphemeral keeps track of Twitter accounts used by prominent racists, misogynists, antisemites, homophobes, neo-Nazis, and other fascists.” They are upfront about their policy but what they fail to mention is that they consider mainstream conservative views to be fascist (along with all the other -ists and -isms).

Semiphemeral also has a message stating that they have “the right to refuse service to anyone for any reason” and that “Everyone deserves privacy on social media, but not everyone is entitled to get that privacy by using this free service”. While it does seem to be within their rights as a private company to determine who to provide their service to (it is free after all), their actions speak to the pervasive view in society that conservative opinions should be shunned and viewed as extreme.

In today’s world, anyone with a right-of-center view is deemed a racist, sexist, fascist, etc. by the leftists, mainstream media, and Hollywood elite. They would rather view anyone who thinks differently than them as hateful and evil, rather than considering that they may simply hold a different view on how to best run the government. When you label anyone with an opposing viewpoint as “fascist” and attempt to censor them, it limits your environment to only those you agree with, blurring your view of the world, and negating the possibility of finding new solutions, learning new information, or even just strengthening your own beliefs.
