Conservative (adj.): tending or disposed to maintain existing views, conditions, or institutions; marked by moderation or caution; marked by or relating to traditional norms of taste, elegance, style, or manners.
This definition, provided by Merriam-Webster, emphasizes a key aspect of the modern day conservative movement: we like tradition. Our core tenants are to protect the ideals of the Founding Fathers, promote liberty, and elevate individual liberties.
While this is a worthy pursuit, I fear the modern movement of conservatism is less a movement than is it a brake. We spend most of our battles hoping to prevent the latest radical push towards socialism from overtaking our nation.
Conservatives in America have become complacent in simply standing against the left, instead of standing in favor of promoting our own ideals. This is the call I wish to make to the movement after the Donald Trump presidency. We must maintain his fighting attitude, and push forth our own ideas—not just stand against socialism.
As many on the right are beginning to say in mockery of the left’s newest “anti-racist” cause, it is not enough to be against socialism, we must be actively anti-socialist.
What does this even look like?
Well, there are a few Senators who are not bad examples to begin to look at.
To begin, Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) has placed significant importance on learning to decrease spending and reaching a more balanced budget. Conservatives tend to be working to fight the great expenditures of the left, but are always forced to concede something and sign the bill anyways. Perhaps it is time to consider a return to caring about the federal budget.
Another lesson comes from a recent act by Tulsi Gabbard, the Democrat representative from Hawaii, introduced two pro-life bills in the House. While these bills do not go far enough in protecting the life of the unborn by any measure, they are a larger step towards the conservative ideal than many Republican members of Congress have taken in years.
Finally, conservatives must stop giving up ground in the culture, as we have for so long. Too often conservatives are simply alright with the left boycotting our businesses, producing whatever propaganda they wish, and changing our language before our very eyes.
While a last resort for conservatives, it might just be time to start playing their game. Support conservative projects and businesses, while avoiding those that bend their knee. Create media of your own. Fight the good fight.
We must not just be willing to stop progressivism from taking us into the future full of critical race theory and wealth redistribution, but to redirect the future by making moral, respectable, and logical arguments in favor of our beliefs.
We are the last line of defense between America and the socialism of Venezuela and Cuba. We are the defenders of the unborn and the Constitution. We are the final fight for freedom of speech and thought.
Ronald Reagan’s famous line is too often repeated and yet taken lightly:
“Freedom is a fragile thing and is never more than one generation away from extinction. It is not ours by inheritance; it must be fought for and defended constantly by each generation, for it comes only once to a people. Those who have known freedom and then lost it have never known it again.”
Conservatives must stop being complacent in simply stopping the wave of socialist ideas and realize that if we want a different future, we must actually change the tide and direction of America.
It is not up to only the elected officials. Every single conservative must begin to speak up about what matters most.
Whether that is tax policy or abortion, we cannot afford to cede any more ground.
Remember that our flag is the one waived in Hong Kong for freedom from tyranny. Our Statue of Liberty is the one that welcomes immigrants. Our success is an inspiration around the world. These belong to all of us. We must reclaim them. The fight begins now.
This great and unbelievable nation of ours is only a Republic if we can keep it. Heed the warning of those that came before. Take back the torch of liberty from progressives.
Complacency is no longer an option. If we truly believe what we claim, it is time to defend them and push for them as fervently as our opponents. We must stand up for America and become our own kind of progressive: the progressives in favor of a truly more perfect union.
