Rapper and pop culture icon turned Christian, Kanye West, announced on November 7th that he will be running for president of the United States in 2024. During an appearance at the Fast Company Innovation Festival held in New York City, Kanye said, “When I run for president in 2024, we would’ve created so many jobs that, in fact, I’m going to walk.”

For months speculation about Kanye running for office has been circulating. The singer’s recent Christian themed album went to #1 on the Billboard charts at the same time as he has become more politically active. Kanye started becoming active with his visit to the White House in 2018 after receiving backlash for wearing a Make America Great Again hat. Later that year, he said he was “distancing himself from politics,” but he now seems ready to jump back into the fray.

So what do we know about Kanye’s political views? The day after saying that he would be running in 2024, Kanye encouraged African-Americans to not vote for Democrats. He said that they had been brainwashed into believing it was their only option, and that voting this way is “not the power.” Kanye has also been vocally pro-life. He spoke against abortion, citing the Bible by saying, “Thou shalt not kill” when speaking in a recent interview.  From what we know so far, Kanye’s beliefs are mostly conservative.

Kanye’s involvement in politics isn’t surprising due to the blending of lines between politicians and celebrities. In recent years, politicians have been featured on nighttime comedy shows and made appearances with musicians and actors. Meanwhile, celebrities have voiced their opinions on almost every major political issue. President Donald Trump himself was not a politician running for office, but was a well-known celebrity.

When did celebrities begin getting so involved in politics? One of the first noteworthy celebrities to hold a major office was Ronald Reagan. Though he is now best known for serving as president from 1981-1989, Reagan was a successful actor in Hollywood. In 1967, he was elected to the office of governor of California, beginning his political career.

Other prominent celebrities that have held political office include Arnold Schwarzenegger, Clint Eastwood, and Sonny Bono. Considering how vocal celebrities are on political issues, it wouldn’t be surprising for more names to be added to this list in the coming years.

For now, we do not know if Kanye will actually follow through on running. No matter your political affiliation, you have to admit that Kanye’s entrance into politics would be entertaining to watch.
