Campaigning during elections is often a tough and thankless job. The long, stressful hours of constant work that sometimes results in nothing but failure is enough to drive a person mad. Author and Radio Host Remso W. Martinez’s new book How to Succeed in Politics (and Other Forms of Devil Worship) is about a young man’s journey through this side of politics.

In contrast to his previous nonfiction works, the book is historical fiction, largely taking place right after the 2016 election season. A theme of the book is the sacrificion of principles for victory: woven in through the story of young Republican campaigner Art Brown’s life is the story of America’s modern devil, former moderate turned hardline segregationist, Alabama Governor George Wallace.

Politics strains personal relationships and leads to dark times for many of those involved in the process. Art Brown’s story captures the very real struggles young campaigners face during the election season. The reader is along for the ride, through the highs and the lows and the wins and the losses. Brown faces the struggle of campaigning for someone he doesn’t agree with in order to put food on the table. Martinez’s writing puts us in the shoes of Brown and makes us understand his conflict. Art Brown isn’t perfect; he’s just a normal university student. However, even with all his flaws, we want him to succeed.

One of the best aspects of the book is Martinez’s retelling of Governor Wallace’s rise and fall in politics. America knows Wallace as a stalwart supporter of segregation, the man who proclaimed he supported “segregation now, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever.” However, Wallace didn’t start out in politics with these beliefs. Wallace’s life serves as a cautionary tale for those willing to sacrifice their principles for victory.

How to Succeed in Politics (and Other Forms of Devil Worship) is a great read. Martinez does a great job writing about the human side of campaigning and the impact it has on candidates and volunteers. For those looking for an enjoyable historical fiction novel to add to their reading list, I would highly recommend checking out the book.
