The Problem With Red Flag Gun Laws

by

In a time where mass shootings are on the rise, the left, and many on the right, are proposing even more liberty-limiting red flag gun laws.

These laws are simple. They take firearms away from law-abiding citizens.

Disgruntled friend? Upset family member? Manager is in a bad mood?

Any of these people can have your constitutional rights stripped without you ever knowing until the police knock on your door to take your firearms away.

There are many things wrong with red flag laws, both legally and socially.

For one thing, these laws put police officers in grave danger. The firearm community does not take kindly to the threat of the government taking away their firearms. In fact, police officers have been shot while executing warrants stemming from red flag laws.

Legally, red flag laws use the standard “guilty until proven innocent” to erode the criminal justice system. The standard of “innocent until proven guilty” is a fundamental principle that the nation’s entire justice system is built upon.

Red flag laws do nothing but limit a person’s constitutional rights. Unfortunately the left, and now many on the right, are coming together to pass these red flag laws.

Recently, Senator Lindsey Graham and Senator Richard Blumenthal announced they would come together on a bipartisan “red flag” bill that would make it easier for police to take firearms out of the hands of law-abiding citizens.

The assault on the Second Amendment continues to amaze many. President Trump, a self-proclaimed friend of the right to bear arms, has shown little support for the Second Amendment during his term. After the Las Vegas massacre, he signed an executive order banning bump stocks.

So what’s next for the Second Amendment?

Many on the left would have no problem taking away a fundamental right that was put in place for just that reason; so it would never be taken away. Interestingly enough, these are the same people who claim that police are too violent. If the Second Amendment is repealed, how will you protect yourself from the “tyrannical police” the left are so worried about?

Opponents of red flag gun laws are not denying that there is a mass shooting problem in the United States. There is a problem, but attacking the Second Amendment is not the answer.

The mass shooting epidemic in the United States is a mental health issue, not a firearms issue. There are ways to fix our mass shooting epidemic without infringing on the rights of the many.

The federal government cannot legislate the nation’s problems away. Instead, it needs to take careful and deliberate action with the medical community and call for a shift in American culture to stop these horrendous acts against humanity.

It’s time conservatives across the nation protect the Second Amendment instead of tearing it down. The Second Amendment is in trouble and we’re the only party that can save it.
