Ever since Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez entered the political arena, the self-proclaimed “Democratic Socialist” has been pushing her radical agenda and promoting chaos within Congress. Now, this polarizing representative is up for reelection and she has a challenger that conservatives and liberals alike should pay attention to.

Scherie Murray is running as a Republican candidate for New York’s 14th congressional district. Murray announced her candidacy on July 16th, and has gained much attention for her boldness in taking on incumbent representative, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

On Twitter she wrote, “You deserve someone who will fight for you, not fight for the limelight.” Murray’s campaign has spent much time pointing out this behavior enacted by Ocasio-Cortez and claiming that Murray will change this if she is elected. Murray has been critical of the current representative’s selfishness and neglect of her own constituents. Murray is stating that she will redirect her focus onto her constituents that have been abandoned by Ocasio-Cortez and the pursuit of her own agenda.

Murray already has a proven record of service to her community. The Esemel Group, the company that she founded has created many jobs and opportunities for minorities in New York City in the field of media. Unlike Ocasio-Cortez, Murray has already proven her commitment to constituents. In addition to her business, she has been involved in advocating for economic development opportunities, school choice initiatives, police relations, and immigration reform according to her campaign website

She has specifically attacked Ocasio-Cortez for “job-killing” ideas. This criticism specifically attacked the current representative’s “Green New Deal” which would try to initiate a stop to climate change, but also eradicate thousands of jobs. Additionally, Murray has also criticised AOC’s responsibility for Amazon pulling out of New York City. Amazon’s corporate campus would have supplied 25,000 jobs, and its pull out was a major setback for potential economic development and opportunity for constituents in New York City.

This candidate evidently loves her country and the opportunities it offers. Murray is a is an immigrant and wants to fight to preserve the opportunity that America offers. She immigrated to the United States from Jamaica when she was 9 years old, and grew up in Queens. On Twitter she stated, “I love America. Not the America radical socialists want to see, but the America that is a land of opportunity for all.”

What makes Murray’s strategy powerful is her direct attack on the selfishness and persona of Ocasio-Cortez. Ocasio-Cortez has made a name for herself as Murray’s dedication to her community is a direct contrast to Ocasio-Cortez’s commitment to fame and obstructing progress in Congress. It will be a hard-fought election. Murray is running in New York’s 14th congressional district which has been occupied by democrats historically. Despite this, people should pay attention to this new candidate who wants to defend American opportunity.

Scherie Murray is in the fight of her life as she aims to end the storm that is Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
