Amidst the diagnosed cases of ‘climate anxiety’ and children boycotting school in protest of climate change, one can’t help but wonder: what is the answer?
According to Pew Research Center, millennials, and Generation Z are more likely than their generational counterparts to deem climate change as primary result of human activity. Furthermore, Pew Research Center also found that Generation Z Republicans were less likely to attribute global warming or climate change to cyclical patterns, and more likely to point to human activity than Republicans of older generations.
The environment, and the climate, is primarily a younger generations’ problem, but absolutely not a partisan problem. The political left has co-opted the idea of environmental cleanliness and conservation as their own. This is not the case.
This Earth is ours: conservatives, moderates, leftists, and everyone else.
Do not allow the left to claim that they are the only ones who care about Earth. In fact, the socialist policies their party touts have historically, destroyed the environments of almost all of the countries they were implemented in.
The former Soviet Union’s environmental downfall began in the 1920’s when Stalin, having forcibly implemented government control and ownership of the means of production, sought to become an industrial superpower. The all-powerful communist government had little regard for anything but success on the world stage, least of all the environment. The result was a collapsed state, unsafe drinking water, two cities in the top ten ‘most polluted cities in the world’ list, toxic air, and more.
Communist China is no stranger to pollution, and environmental destruction either. In China, the devastation included massive crop losses due to acid rain, unintended deforestation as a result of air pollution, and disrupted fish migration patterns. Similar to the Soviet Union, the government had overhauled resource allocation.
Even the United States’ government has wreaked havoc on the environment, itself. The public sector is an offensive force. Many on the left place blame on private corporations for pollution here in America. Little do they know that public sector institutions do far more damage.
Every year, the Department of Defense produces more hazardous waste than the five largest chemical companies combined. Clearly, government bureaucracy cannot, and should not be trusted with the health of our planet.
Instead of expanding a bloated, monstrous government to ‘help’ the environment, let’s look towards solutions, and policies that have yet to be disproven. Tax incentives for net-zero emission energy usage could be wildly successful and without murdering the economy.
If being environmentally conscious was the least expensive option, what would stop everyone from being Green? There are unexplored solutions to our problems.
Don’t accept the idea that government is the answer. It’s almost always not.
