Free Palestine From Hamas

Over St. Patrick’s Day weekend, the people of Gaza took to the streets to protest against the tyranny of Hamas. The Jerusalem Post reports that, under the banner of “We Want To Live!,” the protests were organized by several youth movements and Palestinian factions who rose up against the high taxes, high rates of unemployment, and the continued shortage of electricity in the Gaza Strip. The protests took place all across Gaza in Jabalia, Deir al-Balah, Khan Yunis, Nuseirat, and Al-Bureij.

As is the nature of any terrorist organization, Hamas responded by unleashing its security forces and forcibly cracking down on the protestors. They shot protestors in the streets, beat them with batons, raided their homes, attacked students at Al-Azhar University, and detained Palestinian journalists. One widely circulated video showed a Gazan woman decrying Hamas, saying “Hamas officials’ children drive in luxurious cars, but I have 4 unemployed sons. All of Gaza are unemployed because of Ismail Haniyeh & Yahya Sinwar (Hamas Leaders). These officials care nothing about the poor people’s necessities. We have the right to live.”

The events underscore a fundamental truth to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict: there will be no peace and there will be no two-state solution as long as Hamas remains a major actor in the conflict. As long as Hamas continues to inculcate anti-Semitism, fuel public outrage in Gaza towards Israel, and use their resources for the sole purpose of killing Jews, the status quo will continue to the detriment of Israelis and Palestinians alike.

It is the failure of the international community to understand this fact that has derailed the peace process for the last few decades. The constant pressure put on the Israeli government to act with restraint and make concessions to terrorists has resulted in many strategic mistakes that have fostered the cycle of violence.

Every attempt to broker a peace deal with former PNA leader Yasser Arafat, arguably the most notorious terrorist of the 20th century, all failed miserably. Even when he was offered everything his citizens could have wanted at the 2000 Camp David Summit, including an end to settlements, sovereignty over the Old City, and reparations for the 1948 refugee crisis by Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak, Arafat rejected the deal and launched the 2nd Intifada, putting his anti-Semitic ideology above the welfare of his people.

Facing similar international pressure, the government under PM Ariel Sharon made the tactical blunder of unilaterally withdrawing Israeli presence from Gaza in 2005. Israel forced out Jewish settlers, destroyed Jewish cemetaries, and even left behind Greenhouses that would have helped Gazans feed their citizens.

Enter Hamas, a Sunni offshoot of the Muslim Brotherhood, who’s charter calls for, not just the destruction of Israel, but the murder of every last Jew on planet Earth. The citizens of Gaza foolishly elected them to lead their new government. Those Greenhouses were immediately turned into launching pads for rockets and Israel was forced to blockade Gaza in order to cut off their supply lines to terror supporters such as Iran.

The consequences of Sharon’s government giving Hamas control of Gaza has been severe, both for Israelis and ordinary Palestinians who desire nothing more than to live in peace. It has resulted in three full-scale wars, thousands of rockets launched at civilian areas, and thousands of elaborate terror tunnels built for the purpose of capturing innocent Jews.

Meanwhile, it is the Palestinian people in Gaza that suffer the most under Hamas. They have grotesquely mismanaged the Gazan economy by embracing corruption and patronage, and have taxed their citizens into abject poverty in order to fund their terror activities. They have also used them as human shields by deliberately launching rockets from areas crowded with civilians in order to incur civilian casualties when the IDF responds, something Alan Dershowitz dubbed the “kill babies strategy.” During the 2014 Gaza War, rockets were even found in UN Relief and Works Agency schools in Gaza.

This vicious cycle cannot continue. Any other sovereign nation would rightfully wage war against any entity that fired just one rocket at its cities. The recent protests show that the Gazan people are beginning to turn their outrage away from Israel and toward the autocratic leaders under whom they suffer.

With Hamas backed into a corner, the time is now for Israel to reverse decades of appeasement to terror governments and muster the courage to launch a full-on land/air invasion of Gaza and annihilate the infrastructure of Hamas. They must destroy every rocket, root out every terror tunnel, and bring every last Hamas leader to justice for their crimes against humanity.

This is not an end-all-be-all, but a first step on the long road to peace. With the most pro-Israel American President since Israel’s founding in the White House, there is no better moment for the IDF to make a move against Hamas.

History has proven that there is simply no diplomatic solution with Hamas. If there is any hope for a future of peace between Arabs and Jews, Israel must end the suffering of the Palestinians in Gaza under a terrorist government. The time has come to, once and for all, #FreePalestineFromHamas.
