Debunking Planned Parenthood’s Lies

Planned Parenthood is the nation’s largest abortion provider, with their 2017-2018 annual report indicating that they performed over 332,000 abortions during this period. This perfectly coincides with its current president’s goal of making abortion Planned Parenthood’s “core mission.”

In spite of this, Planned Parenthood manages to recruit staunch supporters by portraying themselves as providing compassionate healthcare, a stance the organization took in the mid-1990s because Planned Parenthood was fearful patients would visit alternative health organizations instead. The decision to advertise themselves as healthcare providers was purely for economic reasons and high ranking Planned Parenthood members were fearful that this reinvention of Planned Parenthood would interfere with the organization’s ability to provide abortions.

Every so often, vocal supporters of Planned Parenthood will take to social media to report how the organization provided them with the necessary care they needed. These posts usually attempt to draw attention away from the fact that Planned Parenthood provides abortions, and convince people that Planned Parenthood is dedicated to women’s health. There are several flaws within this reasoning.

First, posts that claim Planned Parenthood performs complicated surgeries to remove an IUD that has perforated a woman’s uterus is something Planned Parenthood is not equipped to do. Not only has former Planned Parenthood director Abby Johnson debunked this claim, but as pictured below, Planned Parenthood themselves have admitted they do not have the means to perform a surgery like this, and advise seeking care from a hospital instead.

Then there are claims that women are completely dependent upon Planned Parenthood for cancer screenings. Not only does Planned Parenthood not provide mammograms, the amount of healthcare services they provide drops every year, with only 2.4% of women receiving a Pap test in a three-year cycle, and 0.8% of women receiving a breast exam in one year. They also do not provide prenatal care.

In regards to their concern for women’s health, since 2009, 71 ambulances have been called to a Planned Parenthood in St.Louis. But, instead of prioritizing the care of their patient, whose condition reached a point where they were in need of emergency services, Planned Parenthood requested each of the ambulances ‘sneak into’ the clinic. As a patient potentially lay dying, Planned Parenthood requested the ambulances to keep their sirens off, follow all traffic rules because they value their reputation over the lives of their patients.

We saw this concern for preserving their ability to perform abortions being prioritized over patient care again during Planned Parenthood of Southeastern Pennsylvania v. Casey, where Planned Parenthood fought informed consent laws that required them to give women information about what an abortion entails before proceeding with the procedure.

Crafting abortion into a product to be sold, former Planned Parenthood workers and women who have visited one of their facilities have opened up about how Planned Parenthood coerces women into abortions. There are even horrifying cases where women have had parts of their aborted baby left inside of them after the procedure, leading to excessive blood clots and cramping.

What Planned Parenthood doesn’t want people to know is the fact that there are better places for its clients to seek help. Any federally qualified healthcare center will offer a wide variety of care options and not the limited services Planned Parenthood provides. There are 13 times more FQHC sites than there are Planned Parenthood centers, and they serve 21.1 million more individuals than Planned Parenthood.

It is time to call out Planned Parenthood for what they are: an abortion corporation that cares more about selling abortion than preventing them while posing as a legitimate healthcare organization. There are better places for people to seek help, and Planned Parenthood is not necessary for providing healthcare.
