The phrase ‘own the libs’ became a popular internet meme in 2018, but conservatives aren’t the only ones owning libs. As we begin the New Year with a new Congress, let’s reminisce at all the times the ‘libs’ owned themselves….
- Ruth Bader Ginsburg Tackles Colin Kaepernick
In an interview with Yahoo News, the Supreme Court’s oldest judge was asked what she thought of free agent quarterback Colin Kaepernick’s protest of the Anthem in a effort to raise awareness of police brutality. Ginsburg reportedly said, “I think it’s really dumb of them. Would I arrest them for doing it? No. I think it’s dumb and disrespectful.” The judicial icon of the left spoke against Kaepernick. Oh, the horror! Though she later apologized, the bandage doesn’t quite cover the wound.
- Elizabeth Warren and her Native American Heritage
Elizabeth Warren has used her alleged Native American heritage to benefit her in college admissions, job opportunities, and intersectional politics, but when President Trump challenged her claim and dared her to take a DNA test, the results weren’t favorable. In fact, according to the Washington Times, the average American is more Native American than Elizabeth Warren. Now that she has opened an exploratory committee into the presidency, she’ll probably have 1/1024 chance of success.
Elizabeth Warren might win, I don't know, 23 and me states.

- Robert Francis O’Rourke and the ‘Close’ U.S. Senate Election
U.S. Senator Ted Cruz was challenged by young Democrat ‘Beto’ O’Rourke this election cycle. The Democratic Party believed he was a formidable challenger and poured millions of dollars into his election, only to suffer defeat as expected. Though he only lost by about three percent, his loss was greatly predicted by many political pundits. But Beto’s not done yet, as there are whispers of his presidential run in 2020, which I’m sure the conservative community will wholeheartedly welcome.
- Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Her Vast Knowledge on Middle Eastern Conflicts
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortext (AOC) made it clear in an interview that Israel is occupying Palestine, while simultaneously admitting she has no idea what she is talking about. She made it very clear that she is ‘not the expert on geo-politics.’ However, this is just an extension of a larger problem: her inability to articulate the reasoning behind her beliefs.
- The Confirmation of Justice Kavanaugh and the Political Fallout as a Result
The confirmation hearings for Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s brought back painful memories of the Anita Hill/Clarence Thomas controversy of the 1990’s. Blatant character assassination by Democrats appeared to backfire, as after weeks of testimony and hearings, Kavanaugh was confirmed by the Senate. However, the votes of Red-state Democrats were important as elections were right around the corner. All Democrats in Red states who voted against Kavanaugh’s confirmation lost their reelection bids in 2018 (Joe Donnelly, Claire McCaskill, and Heidi Heitkamp).
Sometimes conservatives become to concerned about owning the libs rather than starting meaningful dialogue. Nikki Haley said it best, “Real leadership is about persuasion, it’s about movement, it’s bringing people around to your point of view, not by shouting them down, but by showing them how it is in their best interest to see things the way you do.” In fact, most of the time you don’t even have to lift a finger and the libs will own themselves.
