How many times have you heard the phrase “echo chamber” in conversations about politics? How many times have you told yourself to broaden your political horizons but never followed through? Even though I routinely watch Samantha Bee, John Oliver, and other leftist “comedians,” I never really listened to what they were saying. It’s impossible to defend your arguments if you’ve never really heard the counterpoints. This month, I’ve pledged to spend my time listening to the arguments of the other side.
For the entire month of August, I’ve unfollowed/muted every centrist and right-leaning politician, commentator, and reporter on Twitter and replaced them with not just progressives— but radical leftists. Instead of listening to The Ben Shapiro Show on my morning commute— I’ll listen to Pod Save America and The Young Turks. I’ll spend my evenings watching Chris Matthews and Rachel Maddow instead of Tucker Carlson and The 5.
Hopefully, this thought exercise will help me build bridges and find common ground with those with opposing viewpoints. I’ll be reporting back on my observations with a detailed article in September. I believe that we all mostly want the same thing, but just disagree on the road to take in reaching our goals. Engaging with your ideological opposition will lead you to objective truth.
I encourage anyone who considers themselves objective to join me in what I am calling the August Challenge. Go out and truly listen to the positions of those that you disagree with on the right or the left, try and understand their stance, and then engage their arguments on the merits.
